Together Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a dare for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate horror films: Get comfortable with your significant other and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its streaming debut via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like conventional biological terror, but within Together resides a deep examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a special spark to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The plot commences when Tim and Millie transition from the urban environment to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim fall into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity takes hold of the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, blending elements of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and delivers them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and distant from his support system. He dreads the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together never makes either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Both characters face the sort of issues that arise in any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the metaphor does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could function as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply turn to your significant other and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can undertake today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform now.
