Time is ripe to switch Manchester United's system - the manager declares.

Man Utd squad members in training
Man Utd captain Bruno Fernandes was among multiple first-team stars to miss the Boxing Day triumph against Newcastle United.

Head coach Ruben Amorim says that changing Man Utd's tactical system due to external scrutiny would have meant "his demise" for him.

For the first time against Newcastle United, Amorim abandoned his customary back three formation with wing-backs and chose to field an traditional four-man defense shielded by two central midfielders.

By his own admission this at times functioned as a six-man defensive block in the closing minutes as his squad clung on for a crucial result - securing only their second-ever clean sheet of the campaign.

Although he once memorably stated that even the Pope could pressure him to tweak his approach, Amorim asserts the ability to play with alternative setups has consistently been part of his plan.

Nevertheless, he clarifies he could only make the switch when his team were performing well enough - lest it would seem as if he was succumbing to outside noise.

"When I came here the previous campaign, I recognized maybe I don't have the personnel to excel in that system, but it was the commencement of a process," he commented.

"The goal was to forge an philosophy. Today is a distinct time. We don't have a full complement of personnel, and we have to adapt, so they understand the reason we are changing.

"It is not because of the demands of the media, or the supporters.

"When media criticize altering the formation all the time, I cannot change because the squad will believe I'm altering things because of external voices and I believe that is the end for the coach.

"Once we are playing well in our system, then is the right time to evolve.

"This will help us become a stronger team because when our full complement of personnel return, we are not planning to play with a back three exclusively."

Availability Challenges Persist

With only two wins in their last eight outings prior to defeating Newcastle, it is arguable whether Amorim is correct to state his team have been playing well.

He is, nonetheless, operating with a depleted squad, with seven first-team stars already ruled out for the upcoming home game against winless Wolves.

That figure will rise if midfielder Mason Mount is unable to shake off the injury that led to his exit from the Newcastle game at half-time.

Skipper Bruno Fernandes is one of those who will be absent for the Wolves clash, despite the fact he is understood to be pushing his boss to let him to return after his muscle problem.

"Bruno is already telling me he has to practice," revealed Amorim. "However there is no chance he is going to play against Wolves. No way. That's definitive."

Fernandes' Leadership Endures

Nevertheless, the Portuguese star will almost certainly continue to be a prominent presence, as while most unavailable stars watch matches from the stands, Fernandes was observed keeping a close eye on the pre-match routines from the entrance of the tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim anticipates his captain to continue providing guidance.

"The guy is a leader," he affirmed. "He cannot be that guy that when he is not playing, he's not talking and speaking. He's constantly communicating. That is the reason he's the skipper.

"There are bad things at times - the way he moves his arms - but he has a multitude of strengths. Even after he finishes treatment, he goes to observe the rest of the squad training. There are a lot of aspects that go unnoticed.

"I don't know if he desires my position or not, but he's a leader. The guy is a leader."

Recovery Timeline for Key Players

While the exact date for the captain's return - and that of other injured stars like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - remains uncertain, by the end of January, the club will welcome back Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from international duty.
