The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Sees Major Alliance Forged Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor
In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.
"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The September uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Discussions Underway
In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of leading political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
