Patients Coming Off Slimming Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets
Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People using such treatments should be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a return to starting weight within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Therapies
The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
The team note that people who lose weight through dieting usually see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Experts believe the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful return of hunger.
"I experienced a switch activating and you're instantly starving," said one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Interest
Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle support.
