Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry
Pat Cummins has claimed 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.
The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming historic rivalry.
Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.
Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches set to start on November 21 in Western Australia.
Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of participating.
"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, not just the back issue, but further aspects," he commented.
"It's positive. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a major part. With luck from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll reassess."
Previous Setbacks
The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lower back issue.
He has a history of recurring issues, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in a short span.
He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.
The selector indicated that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the opener.
Alternative Arrangements
Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.
All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against India as a safety move because of soreness in his side.
Bailey described it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."
"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.
"He was only going to play the starting games anyway. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for a short period, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
